Reading KS1 and EY
Reading is a central strand to all we do at school. We need children to be great readers and enjoy reading and the way we will instil this is by reading high quality books with and to your child.
How will my child be taught to read?
We start by teaching phonics to the children in the Reception class. This means that they learn how to ‘read’ the sounds in words and how those sounds can be written down (see guidance below). This is essential for reading, but it also helps children learn to spell well. We teach the children simple ways of remembering these sounds and letters. Ask them to show you what these are.
To support this phonic acquisition children are given books for home that are using the same sound patterns that they have learnt in school.
On top of this all children are given a book banded book. This is assessed regularly and enables children to have a book closely pitched to their reading level to share at home.
The teachers read to the children, too, so the children get to know all sorts of stories, poetry and information books. They learn many more words this way and it also helps their writing.
Homework is centred on reading. We ask you to read with your child each day and read to your child for ten minutes from a book that they may not be able to read themselves. This encourages a love of books and a knowledge of language and vocabulary that they may not be able to access themself...yet!
What do the book bands mean?
We use an excellent approach to phonics called Read, Write Inc. Please see the introductory powerpoints and guidance to give you an understanding of the scheme in general.
Home reading books are also aligned to current phonic level to ensure that children are able to access books effectively.
Children in KS2 may also access phonics support in small groups or on a 1:1 basis.
Each year a phonic workshop will be held for families so that you feel confident to support your child at home. Should you have any questions please just ask your class teacher and they will be happy to support you.
