What is Pupil Premium?

Pupil Premium was introduced by the Department of Education (DfE) in 2011, as additional funding for pupils who recieve free school meals and who are looked after. This is because the DfE recognised that good education is the key to improving the life chances of individuals. Evidence has shown that children from low income families are less likely to leave their education with good GCSEs and this funding is being used to address this. The funding was also introduced for children whose parents are currently serving in the armed forces. This premium is used to address the emotional and social well being of these pupils.

Our Intent

As a school we strive for all of our pupils to achieve the best they can in all areas of the curriculum. We strive to use our additional funding to close the gap for all students and ensure that we provide children with the skills and knowledge to 'Live life in all its fullness.' We want all children to be in line with their peers and not face any social disadvantage.

Our Implementation

At Platt C of E Primary , we organise teaching and learning to meet the needs of all of our children. We arrange the support so that it is appropriate for all, whether they be vulnerable children, those in reciept of Pupil Premium or not.

Our pastoral care and tracking of pupils helps us to identify any pupils who are at risk of not making sufficient progress. For those who are identified as not making the progress we would like we are then able to quickly implement intervention strategies to bridge the gaps.

We have small numbers of children who are in reciept of Pupil Premium so we must ensure that we spend the funds carefully; ensuring sustained improvements in both well-being and academic achievement. Focussed intervention in groups or individual sessions are often key to our children and ensuring progress and as a school we carefully monitor the cost implications with the outcome to ensure that this is valuable. We may also need staff training, time and resources to ensure that provision is the strongest it can be.

As a high achieving school set within the context of a deprivation indicator we are below the national average. One potential challenge for students is that they will not have the same starting point of experiences as thier peers. We believe that we should provide a wide range of opportuntites such as music lessons, sporting opportunities and access to extra curricular activities.

Families across the school are exceptionally important to the outcomes for our pupils. Parents who have children in reciept of this funding will be encouraged to engage as much as possible and plans will be shared of how we feel the support just be focussed.

We provide an annual plan based upon the cohort needs. This is shared below.

Who is eligible for Free School Meals?

If parents receive any of the following their child may be entitled to receive free school meals:

· Income Support

· income-based Jobseekers Allowance

· income-related Employment and Support Allowance

· support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999

· the guaranteed element of State Pension Credit

· Child Tax Credit (provided you’re not also entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual gross income of no more than £16,190)

· Working Tax Credit run-on - paid for 4 weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit

· Universal Credit

Children who get any of the above benefits in their own right (ie they get benefits payments directly, instead of through a parent or guardian) can also get free school meals.

It is important that all children who qualify for Free School Meals are registered, even if you choose not to take up the offer. Some points to consider are:

· registering is confidential

· taking up the meal is recommended but is not compulsory

· a child may receive additional help as a result of being registered, eg help with the cost of music lessons or school trips

· registering a child for free school meals will bring more money to their school.
